Celebrating Memorial Day in a traditional way |
---|
Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day was earlier known as Decoration Day. As known to many this day is celebrated to commemorate people who sacrificed their lives for the United States. However, this day is now less of an occasion of remembrance. Instead Memorial Day is today seen as the beginning of summer season. Here are some traditional ways on how to celebrate the Memorial Day.
As a tradition, people fly the US flag at half mast from dawn until noon. In order to pay homage and respect to the martyrs and others who laid their lives for the nation, people also visit cemeteries and other such memorials. Some people also place small American flags on each grave in national cemeteries. Since this day is seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events, many people prefer to hold picnics, or participate in different sports events. Memorial Day weekend makes the perfect time for family gatherings too. Most offices including Government offices are closed on Memorial Day. Therefore people take it as an opportunity to spend in vacationing or visiting their far living families. Memorial Day weekend is a time of celebrations. Therefore, spend quality time with your family, friends and enjoy every minute of this long weekend together. With reopening of swimming pools, you can also enjoy this time having fun in pools.
